Our Story

My name is Latia Allen, and I have worked in higher education for 15 years. My career allowed me to meet students from all walks of life. Many students have financial burdens, and they are seeking assistance. I noticed firsthand when my youngest daughter started college that there were students who lacked dorm room

essentials. I wanted to make a difference and realized that helping students with

their dorm essentials is often forgotten when paying for college—and this idea sparked Dorm Fairies.
 
After discussing the idea with my husband Derrick and daughter Kyndall, we made Dorm Fairies a reality in July 2019 - and became a 501c3 on August 6, 2019! 

Since July 2019, Dorm Fairies has awarded over 90 students with dorm room essentials - over $47,000 in awards (each student gets over $500 worth of dorm essentials). This was made possible by private and public donations, grants and partnerships. In 2024, we also had our first dorm essentials supply drive and impacted 32 students with dorm room supplies!

Our goal is to increase the number of award recipients each year. This year, we exceeded our goal of 25 students and awarded 26 students! In 2025, our goal is to award at least 25 students dorm room essentials! We are also planning our 2nd Dorm Dash — a dorm essentials supply drive for June 2025, with a goal of impacting 50 students in 2025!
